Tina was invited by Rev. Christina Berry who was unable to attend today and who also serves on the Diversity Committee. News & Notes - Jan. 14, 2020Boots & Shoes - $104 50/50 - $123 Guests - Dixon Rotarian, Leo Patterson Student Guests - Louis Vargas - SHS Gabriel Fiorini and Sierra Williams - NHS Yuzuki - Shared that she began economics class this semester. Host family took her to Chicago where she had Deep Dish Pizza and didn't eat for 24 hours after as it filled her up so much. Program - Greg King introduced coach Dale Dykeman from SHS. Dale introduced members of the SHS Class 3A State Volleyball champions. - Grace Gould, Brie Brum, Brook Brum, Lexie Rodriguez and Grace Egan. Coach Dale spoke about the hard work the team put in to achieve their success. Lexie Rodriguez had an opportunity to play in Egypt where they won Gold. She was also named Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year. The community is proud of this amazing group of athletes who won State for the second year in a row. Thanks Greg & Coach Dykeman. News & Notes - Dec. 17, 2019Boots & Shoes - $112 50/50 - $92 No Guests Today No Students Today Yuzuki told us she turns 16 in ten days and that in Japan turning 16 is not a big deal as it is in the US. she had a party of about 20 friends which she enjoyed very much. This is finals week at SHS and she still has some studying to do. Ed Andersen introduced Kris Noble, Executive Director of the Sauk Valley Area chamber of Commerce. Kris was proud to announce that the Chamber had received the "Outstanding Chamber of the Year" award from the National Chamber of Commerce. Additionally through the works of Kris and her Board they also were Five Star Accredited this year. Both of those achievements are a testament to the commitment of Kris and her Board of Directors. News & Notes - Dec.10, 2019Boots & Shoes - $113 50/50 - $74 Guests - Dixon Rotarian, Leo Patterson, Cathy Binder, Weston Henry, Director of SHS Madrigals Student Guests - Madrigals Yuzuki told us she has moved to her new host family, John & Kelly Hahn and thanked the Geil family for hosting her. She went Christmas Tree Shopping and was thrilled as it was the first time she has had a Christmas Tree. Participated in the SHS choir program and the Madrigal Dinner and continues to enjoy participating on the bowling team. Christy Zepezauer introduced Mr. Weston Henry, Music Director at SHS. He in turn introduced the Madrigals. Our Rotary Club thoroughly enjoyed the beauty of the sounds of Christmas as performed by the SHS Madrigals. News & Notes - Nov. 19, 2019Boots & Shoes - $245 50/50 - $50 - Guests - Dixon Rotarian, Leo Patterson, Rick Huber, guest of Dirk Meminger Angie & Matt Prescott and their son Robbie. Patty Berge, guest of John Berge Student Guests - Madeline Ryan, Emma Frank, Jonathan Rhode Yuzuki - Yuzuki has joined the SHS bowling team and while she does not think she is a good bowler yet, she enjoys it and has made more friends. Program - Jon Schemmer, SHS Head Football Coach. Jon shared about the football program as SHS and how they feel the community support has a big impact on the success of NHS & SHS athletics. Shared that many other teams are envious of the athletic facilities at SHS and also that the students do not take it for granted and value the facilities and equipment they are provided. News & Notes - Oct. 29, 2019Boots & Shoes - $79 50/50 - $50 - Guests - Leo Patterson from Dixon Rotary and Betty Clementz from RF Rotary Prospective Member - Janna Groharing, guest of Dana McCoy Student Guests - NHS - Avery Meyer & Clare Sanders Yuzuki - Yuzuki went to a concert in Iowa and while she is not a fan of country music she really enjoyed herself. She was happy to see snow as she does not get to see snow in Tokyo. She was saddened to share that Typhoon #19 caused much damage and 88 people died as a result of this deadly storm. Program - Jerry Binder welcomed Joan Hermes, Executive Director of the CGH Health Foundation. Joan thanked our club for our generosity over the years. She also shared about the many programs the foundation supports including the most recent one, the Pediatric Rehab Center. The club passed the hat and matched $200 for a total of $541. Steve Nunez and Nolan Halla from SVCC Rotaract Club Student Guests - NHS - Avery Meyer & Clare Sanders. SHS - Grace Gould, Claudia Garcia, Andrea Cervantes, Sarah Kuhns Yuzuki - Yuzuki was unable to attend due to a test. Program - Tim Schwingle welcomed Leo Patterson from the Dixon Rotary Club. Leo shared his experiences attending the International Rotary Convention in Hamburg, Germany. He presented many beautiful and interesting pictures of the area and the event. Student Guests - NHS - Ellie Kerner & Connor McBride - SHS - Cori Chavez, Andrea Cervantes, Claudia Garcia, Grace Gould, Sarah Kuhns Yuzuki - Yuzuki shared her week. It was Homecoming week and she enjoyed dressing up during the week's festivities. Had fun attending the homecoming football game as well as the dance. Tennis season is over and she thoroughly enjoyed that as well. Program - Loren Schlomer introduced our District Governor, Bobbi Burke where she was welcomed with a standing ovation. Bobbi spoke about our new theme - "Rotary Connects the World" Spoke about three challenges for district clubs - 1. Think about meeting times, and venues to encourage membership. 2. Apply for Matching district Grants 3. Think about how our club will get connected. She congratulated us as our district exceeded the Foundation goal last year. Student Guests - NHS - Dean Ellorando & Kyle Tunisk SHS - Ava Shaw Program - Ron Potthoff introduced, Dawn Young, Whiteside County Recorder Dawn has been the County Recorder since 1981 and was first elected in 1996. She explained much about how things are recorded in her office. They file 30 - 40 documents per day and all documents are micro filmed. Recording fees are $43. All county residents are able to sign up for Property Fraud Alert for free, which alerts them of any activity regarding their property. Her job is very interesting and we thank her for sharing. They stayed in a very large house with a pool and a good time was had by all. She wants us to let her know if we want to know anything about her country and she will share that with us. It is an amazing group of riders who are passionate about riding but more importantly the good work of St. Jude's hospital. The club passed the hat and raised $889. She was also able to meet another exchange student from Japan, with whom she was able to speak her beloved Japanese. Lori Lowe and Bill Mclemore. They both bring a long and interesting history of their Rotary involvement and we welcome them into our club. Program - Steve Munson introduced our last year's outbound student Brice Taylor. Brice presented many photos of his experience in the Southern part of France. He included photos of his host families, all the delicious food and pastries he enjoyed. He also shared many American things with his French friends such as, Elf on the Shelf and hanging stocking on the fireplace. Everyone enjoyed his presentation. News & Notes - Aug. 13, 2019Boots & Shoes - $105 50/50 - $50 Guests - Yuzuki Hosai moment included her adjusting to the size of Sterling coming from the large city of Tokyo. She joined the tennis team and school starts on Aug. 14 which she is looking forward to. Program - Chris Mitchell introduced Jerry Beranek, retired from Gold Star FS. Jerry is representing the Sterling American Legion. The Sterling Legion is celebrating their 100th anniversary and has about 300 members.The Legion provides much to the community by making donations to various civic and community funds, they provide the Honor Guard at Military Funerals. The Legion also participates in celebrations including Veteran's day, Memorial Day and Pearl Harbor Day. Legislation was just passed that now allows any veteran to become a Legion Member. Additionally there is a group for children of Veteran;s called Sons of American Legion as well as the Legion Auxiliary. In celebration of their 100th Anniversary, there is an open house planned for September 21 and a gold outing planned for Sept, 7. Thanks Jerry for sharing about this prestigious organization honoring US Veterans. |

It was stressed that if you are not interested in Facebook that is Ok. You can access information by going to our Website - sterlingilrotary.com Our website is a part of ClubRunner which is provided to clubs by Rotary International. The club pays a small annual fee to utilize ClubRunner. we currently use ClubRunner to bill dues to members, create and archive the weekly bulletins and track membership. Dana sent out instructions recently on how to access ClubRunner. To look up your Foundation giving information, www.rotary.org and create an ID and password on that site. Your id is your email address and you can then choose your unique password. Dave also showed us how to download the app, Club Locator. Great to use when you are traveling and looking for a club to attend. Thanks for sharing this valuable information with the club membership. |

Mark shared his his story of starting his own business, MCR Technologies Group, Inc. His business has been extremely successful and adding the web based technology has increased his market share. He spoke about how this spring has been challenging because of the record amounts of rain, particularly in April. He spoke about three areas that impact farming, Climate, such as the wet spring, Economics - the political environment and Social - the growth of urban areas impacting the "family farms". Roger Wait and Allen Przysucka, Sunrise Rotary Mayor Skip Lee and his guests, prospective members, Lori Lowe and Bill McLemore Aaleya Gaffey Fritiof Shared about how much he is enjoying baseball and will be presenting on July 9 about his year in the USA. Program - Dana McCoy received the Frank Broderick award in 2005 and was here to tell us about her connection with Rotary. Dana has been a dedicated Rotarian, traveling on several trips to dig wells and vaccinate children against polio. Dana is definitely an outstanding example of Service Above Self. Thank you Dana for your belief and commitment to Rotary. |

Sterling Noon Rotary - June 25, 2019Boots & Shoes - $106 50/50 - $135 Guests - Teri Porter, Bryce Olson Fritiof was absent Program - John Berge introduced Dirk's program today, Cindy DeLafuente, Kim Martin and Susie LeMay. This group are eager to organize activities and events for individuals needing assistance because of developmental disability. They spoke about the Sparkle program, which paired youth with Newman students to teach cheerleading where the youth could then perform at athletic events. They currently have a choir and have hosted proms and other activities. They need help from the community/businesses to organize and formalize activities, events and jobs for individuals who tend to fall through the cracks of life that we all take for granted. My sister is developmentally delayed due to trauma occurring during her birth and I applaud their efforts and hope others do as well. Thank you Dirk for scheduling this valuable program on a great need in our community. |

News & Notes - June 18, 2019Boots & Shoes - $133 50/50 - $126 Guests - Dixon Rotarian, Leo Patterson, RF Rotarian, Cheryl Faber Fritiof was absent due to traveling. Program - Dana Mccoy introduced Deb Keaschall from CGH. Deb has served on the CGH team for 24 years and is currently the Auxiliary/Volunteer/Chaplaincy Program Manager and Ethics Coordinator. Deb spoke about the auxiliary and its long history of 72 years and the many things they help with including the patient volunteer program, managing the gift shop, fundraisers and purchasing items for CGH such as the holiday lighting. . She shared an inspirational story of Charles Plumb, a pilot during the Vietnam War who parachuted from his damaged plane and was taken captive and held as a POW for 6 years. He shares the story of meeting the person who packed his parachute. And he ties that to a presentation he gives about "Who Packed your Parachute?". Deb illustrated how volunteers at the hospital pack parachutes each day in helping patients and families at CGH. Thanks Deb for sharing. |

Program - Barb Majeski introduced, IL State Representative of the 71st District, Tony McCombie. Tony introduced her staff, Liz Buckwalter and intern, Claire Milnes. Representative McCombie shared much information regarding the state budget. It was an informative program. We encourage those who want to learn more about IL finances and the IL budget to visit the state website. Our club was honored to have representative McCombie visit our club . |

News & Notes - June 4, 2019Our Annual Rotary Pork Chop BBQ was held this day. One of our biggest ever. Many thanks to Gunnar and the many Rotarians and Volunteers who came out to work and support this, our largest fundraiser. |

News & Notes May 28, 2019Boots & Shoes - $219 (Thanks to Bill Shaw for his generous donation) 50/50 - $105 Fritiof shared his attendance at a Cubs Game, his graduation and attending several graduation parties. He will be leaving soon for a two week tour of the west coast. Program - Dave Lowe introduced Alison White, Safe Passages Coordinator at Sinnissippi Centers. Alison is employed through a grant funded by the Department of Criminal Justice. Alison's primary responsibility is to assist those individuals wanting to go into treatment to achieve that. She responds to drug overdoses and counsels the individuals on entering treatment. The Safe Passage program allows persons who are addicted to go into a law enforcement center and ask for treatment. Alison is called and facilitates that process. Alison shared with us that she is a former substance abuser and said everyone had given up on her and it took one person to not give up. She entered treatment and now has completed her bachelors degree and is almost finished with her masters in clinical Psychology. Alison's story was an inspiring journey, and enlightened us about the drug problem facing our communities. Thank you Alison and Dave for bringing this information to us. |

News & Notes - May 21, 2019Boots & Shoes - $66 50/50 - $93 Guests -Rachel Humphreys, daughter of Rotarian Mark Humphreys visited today. Rachel is a recent college graduate and will be starting her career in St. Louis with Edward Jones. Fritiof was absent today. John G. announced that he and his wife LuAnn attended the District Conference in Galena and our club was awarded a "Certificate of Appreciation" for our Public Image. Thanks to Barb Majeski and Dana for their efforts to promote the activities of our club. Program - Nick Lareau introduced Janna Groharing, Executive Director of Sterling Main Street. Nick moved to Sterling in 2012. He has heard a lot of stories about the "good old days" of Sterling and he has an interest in ensuring Sterling continues to move forward and joined the Main Street board as an active participant. Janna Spoke about the goals of Main street - 1 - Bringing unique shops and dining experience to the downtown and 1 - Attract and retain Millennials. Sterling Main street is currently surveying community members and left surveys for those interested to complete and return. To meet the needs of the community, they need to know what the community wants and needs. He also told us how much he enjoyed attending prom and post prom. Program - Greg King introduced Joel Penne, Coachof the SHS Chess team. Coach Joel brought several players from the team and shared their accomplishments. Won Sterling Invite 2 times - 2 times conference champs - ICCA 2A state champs - National champions He spoke a lot about the progression of the team. Told us about Niko, an exchange student from Poland, who was also the Polish Junior Nationals Champion. Niko was able to help the team improve by sharing his skills and his leadership of his teammates. Coach Penne was also named Coach of the year in 2014. Thanks for sharing, Coach Joel and Greg. |

News & Notes - May 7, 2019Boots & Shoes - $101 50/50 - $72 Guests - Leo Patterson, Dixon Rotary The club gave a big thank you to Deb Kelly from NHS and Jeff Gale from SHS. These are the individuals who are responsible for getting the students here each week so they can share their stories and future plans. Thank you for your efforts! Fritiof shared with us that he was pleased to be back visiting the club after his accident. Additionally he is pleased to now be able to eat without pureeing his food. We continue to wish him well on his future surgeries. Program - This was the annual meeting where students participate by assuming club responsibilities. This year it was Newman High School students who assumed the responsibilities of greeters, Sgt. at Arms, Fun and Frolic, Invocation and the club Presidents role. They did an excellent job. Sterling students had the responsibility of providing the program and they didn't disappoint as the Challand Middle School eighth grade choir entertained us with excerpts from "Grease" and the band "Queen". Exciting News NHS - Alex Whelan, Lexie Wether, Sydney Christophersen SHS - Emalia Dunkel, Isaiah Ryan Fritiof - Absent today due to an appointment. Program - Lee Kraut Lee introduced Rotary member, Wolf Koch and his spouse, Linnea. They shared their trip to Bosque del Apache in New Mexico which is a National Wildlife Refuge. They told us about the Sandhill cranes and the many snow geese which inhabit this region. They both shared their amazing photography of the cranes and snow geese. News & Notes - April 23, 2019Boots & Shoes - $83 50/50 - $53 Guests - Leo Patterson, Dixon Rotary Student Guests - Aaliyah Gaffey - SHS - Aaliyah will be our outbound exchange student to Italy NHS - Drew Ackeman, Alex Whelan SHS - Emalia Dunkel, Valerie Villareal, Nikki Collin, Isaiah Ryan Fritiof - Thanks to Tom and Michelle Jensen for hosting a well attended open house for Fritiof, his father and his sister. Sadly, the next day, Fritiof was injured playing baseball when he was accidentally struck by the baseball bat. Fritiof has significant healing to do, but fortunately no life threatening injuries. We miss you Fritiof and look forward to a speedy recovery for you and having you back at our meetings. Program - Gunnar Ortgiesen - BBQ - BBQ - BBQ on June 4. This is our only fundraiser we do and we need everyone's help. All proceeds go to support our donations to local groups, such as Rotaract, the SHS Chess Club, SHS Bots, The Student Excellence Event are a few examples. This year, we will once again apply for a matching district grant along with Morrison and Rock Falls to support the Summer Manufacturing Camp for youth partnering with WACC and Woodlawn Arts Academy. Dave introduced Le Hartman, facilitator for the SVCC Community Leadership Program and Andrew Katchberg, one of the class participants. The program is intended to build leadership skills, broaden knowledge of local region and unlock potential as an effective leader in our community. The program runs August through May. Le spoke to us about her role as facilitator and her skills at managing the program and speakers. Andrew is a participant and shared about how helpful the program is to him in building his skills as a leader and learning about the community. Thanks for a great program. Special Thank You Thanks to John Gvozdjak and his family for the excellent job planning and hosting the Student Excellence event. We thank all the Rotarians who participated and attended, 23 of our club members in all. This event should make us all proud to be a member of the Sterling Noon Rotary. |

News & Notes - March 26, 2019Boots & Shoes - $93 50/50 - $50 Guests - Leo Patterson from Dixon Rotary & Roger Wait from Sunrise Rotary Student Guests No student guests due to spring break Fritiof - Fritiof shared that he is on the SHS tennis team and feels his game is improving. He plays doubles and has his first tournament soon. Hes been very busy and enjoying all the new opportunities he has experienced. Thanks Fritiof! Program - Christina Berry introduced Pastor Gary Dekoekoek. Gary provided information on the Unite Camp which is a movement of teenagers who UNITE for a 1/2 week of fun, service and worship. Teens in grades 8 -12 come together to paint houses in our communities for those who may not be able to do it for themselves. This year's event is June 4 - 7, 2019. Cost to students is $50, although scholarships are available for those who need assistance with this fee. In 2018 this group painted 5 homes in Sterling & Rock Falls. There is a Facebook page where you can obtain more information and the website address is saukvalleyunite.org. Applications to participate or to apply for your home to be painted can be found at the website. This group is a blessing to our local youth and to our community, Thanks Christina & Gary. |

He was excited to share that the SHS Chess team won Nationals in the unrated division. He is starting tennis. He also has been practicing playing guitar accompanying fellow classmate, vocalist Anna Mohr and they will be performing at Open Mic night at Beans and/or Air Play. Thanks Fritiof. Program - Tom Jensen introduced Jake Lipka, Tennis Pro at Sterling Park district. Jake provided us with a written history of the Westwood Racquet facilities since 1971. Very interesting to see the progression and changes that have occurred. Jake has introduced many new programs to Westwood, such as partnering with the Midwest Youth Tennis Association, learning and tournament opportunities for 10 & under youth, cardio tennis, adult drills, mixed doubles on Sundays from 1 - 3, youth single day tournaments. Court #1 is now a smart court which allows for players to review their technique and data. Free youth tennis is offered in the summer for ages 4 - 9. They are also redoing the 9 outdoor courts. Jake indicated that Pickleball is a fast growing game across the country and in our community as well. Jake did a great job informing us of the many opportunities Westwood has to offer for tennis and pickleball. Thanks Jake and Tom. |

Dr. Anderson spoke about the Ag curriculum at the college and the many advances made within the past 18 months. They have added Transfer Degrees, split the curriculum into Animal Science and Agronomy/Ag Business. They have added Ag certificate programs and partner with businesses on externships which allow students to work and earn salary/benefits while attending school. He spoke of adding chickens to the program and hope to add goats as well. Sauk will host 8, 4 day long Ag Mechanic workshops for Ag teachers soon. It was interesting and exciting to hear about all of the advances in the Ag curriculum at SVCC. Dr. Anderson's presentation was informative as well as entertaining. |

No charge to attend and he would appreciate Rotarians attending. Program - Tim Schwingle introduced Joan Hermes, Executive Director of the CGH Health Foundation. Joan shared that she has been the director for 27 years. She shared with us the many important programs the Foundation supports. Our club passed the hat and raised $391 and the club matched $200 for a total of $591. Thanks for members generosity. |

LuAnn & Katie Gvozdjak Student Guests SHS - Shelley Saathoff NHS - Julia Ardis, Michael Frank and Katherine Crisham Fritiof shared how much he enjoyed his role in Mama Mia and thanked everyone who attended. They raised $900 at the Pizza Ranch fundraiser. Moves this week to his new host family, the Jensens. His parents are visiting around April 18 and will be attending a Rotary meeting. Program - John G. hosted the program, the SHS Robotics Team. John introduced Mr. Rivera who shared information about the program which has only been in existence for a few years. Students on the team shared with us their roles on the team and how they anticipate these skills to be helpful in their future. The group then demonstrated their robot which was extremely impressive. Because Verizon has an international plan, he is looking for someone with a Verizon plan who will allow him to share for the remainder of his stay. Program - Kevin Heller was the program. Kevin shared interesting information about himself and his background including how he became involved in becoming a wresting coach. He also brought two of his wrestlers with him and shared stories about their successes.. Good job Kevin! |

Gary showed us two new marketing videos. Viedo 1 illustrates the opportunities for new business in our area. Video 2 illustrates the quality of life in our area. Both are excellent tools to market our communities and we thank Gary for sharing. Program - Jerry Binder introduced David Hellmich, President of SVCC and Lori Cortez, Director of the SVCC Foundation. Dave spoke about the value and importance of Community Colleges and how fortunate we are to have such an excellent one available to our communities. Lori spoke about the Foundation and a new program being instituted, "Sauk Promise Program". The goal is to raise awareness of the value of college to youth as young as elementary school. The program will be introduced to area schools and after participating students meet 5 criteria they may be eligible to 3 yrs of education at SVCC. SVCC Foundation will be kicking off a 12 million dollar campaign in the spring with an annual sustainability campaign of 500,000 annually. Great Program! |

Fritiof was in the Dells with the McCoys then meeting Schlegels in Chicago. Program - John Berge introduced Jerry Schnake, volunteer at the Reagan Home and Paige Toms, Board Member. Jerry shared a few interesting stories about the Reagan family when they lived in his boyhood home in Dixon. The home receives about 8,000 visitors annually as a popular visitor site in our area. Also shared the cost of upkeep on the home. Paige shared a bit about their campaign to raise funds to support the home and continued maintenance costs. We will be hearing more about this soon. Feb, 8 a fundraising event is scheduled with Michael Reagan as the keynote speaker. More to come on this event. Thanks for a wonderful program. |

Fritiof had a quiet weekend as he was under the weather. Almost missed Rotary today as he was in the nurse's office napping and they almost forgot to wake him. He auditioned for the school play, Mama Mia and received the part of Bill. We look forward to seeing Fritiof in his acting debut on the stage. Program - Jon Berens intorduced Heather Wittenauer, Principal of Jefferson School. Heather spoke to us about the summer reading program which they would like to continue but would need funding. The program provides 8 books to Kindergarten and first Graders throughout SPS5 along with a schedule for completing the books. The package includes a book bag, reading light and other items donated by Halo. The books are returned and reused for the next year. This program allows the kids to maintain their reading skills over the summer months. 475 students participated in the program. This sounds like an important program for our youth. Nice job Heather. |

Went to Wisconsin to meet Brice's host family sister who will be an incoming exchange student. Attended the International Thanksgiving dinner hosted by the Leo Patterson family. Fritiof will be heading to a chess meet later today. Busy, busy, busy.... Program - Ed Andersen was our program today sharing his trip to China. Was fortunate to travel with his neighbor who has much experience traveling to China. He shared a lot of information about visiting Shanghai and Beijing. Also was able to see the Terracotta soldiers. Linda spoke to the 6 areas of focus, Promoting Peace, Supporting Women & Children, Fighting disease, Providing Clean Water, Sanitation & Hygiene, Supporting Education and Growing Local Economies. The goal is to have every Rotarian give a minimum of $100 this year to the Foundation. Brad distributed forms to sign up for auto withdrawal from your checking account for those interested. News & Notes - Nov. 13, 2018Boots & Shoes - $64 50/50 - $58 Guests - Jana Jacobs, Craig Bowen, - Emily Taylor, Cynthia Stringer & Karen Voss from Hospice - Mark Humphreys Program - Cynthia Stringer, Bereavement Counselor from Rock River Hopice and Home spoke about the bereavement service that hospice provides to the families of Hospice patients. Each family is assessed for how they may be dealing with their personal grief. A plan is put in place depending on their individual needs. Sometimes it requires ongoing counseling, or participating in a grief group, or just an occasional touch base. Every family receives mailings during the 13 months following the passing of their loved one. As a medicare certified Hospice, they are required to provided these services for every family for 13 months and there is no reimbursement from Medicare for these services. Karen spoke about the 29th annual Festival of Trees and encouraged all to take a moment and check it out. The hat (stocking) was passed and with a match from our club a, $392 donation was made to Hospice. Thanks for your generosity. |

James Bushman a punch press operator at Frantz Mfg. nominated John. John was one of several in a group that were able to take part in this exciting event. Frantz Mfg. was also recognized for participating in the ESGR program, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. John spoke about the Frantz commitment to veterans and active reserves that are employed at Frantz. Thanks John and Russ for a very interesting program. |

Played at the SHS invitational, played int he regional soccer game. Program - Ray Sharp introduced Jim Boesen from the AARP tax aide organization. This group of volunteers provides tax preparation to those in need. Jim has been involved for 20 years of the 50 years in service. They are at the YWCA on Thursdays from 11 - 4 and the Whiteside Senior Center on Mondays from 10 - 4 and in Dixon on Mondays & Thursdays. Annually they do 2,000 tax returns for those needing assistance. They could use more volunteers and begin recruiting in Dec. with a 1-2 day training held in January. He thanked Tim for his End Polio Now t-shirt which he will wear during the Oct. 13 walk. He is running for president of the orchestra board. Program - Ed Saunders introduced Stephanie Englund a substance abuse counselor from Sinnissippi Centers. Stephanie spoke about the recovery house recently opened for men. It is a 10 bed home which serves as an inpatient residence for men post their 28 day treatment. She explained that after completing treatment it is important that individuals have a safe place to continue their recovery. They hope to be able to open one for women in the future. He will be attending homecoming with Kaitelyn Grell. He also demonstrated a CUBS alarm clock he received at the CUB game which plays "GoCubsGo". He also came in costume as it was "cartoon character" day at SHS for homecoming. Program - Loren Schlomer introduced Lauren Wills who is a chiropractor and a member of the Sunrise Rotary. Lauren is on the board of "Friends of Hennepin Canal" and spoke about the work the group is doing in raising funds to repair Lock 33, on the feeder canal in Rock Falls along with two other locks on the Hennepin. They are holding an Ultra Running event beginning Oct. 6. Three races, 100mile, 50K and 50 miles. they have 450 runners enrolled in the race. The group has raised $25,000 to date and hope to repair Lock 33 first working with the IDNR to accomplish this. Thanks for sharing Loren & Lauren! |

Program - Ron Potthoff introduced Tekla Martin of the Sterling Police Dept. and comfort dog, Brinkley. Tekla explained that when the K-9 dog retired, the dept. decided to replace him with Brinkley. Brinkley attends community events, provides comfort to youth and adults involved in traumatic events, and goes regularly to April House to support the children. Brinkley came from a highly regarded trainer in Kalamazoo, MI. After learning how Brinkley was to be utilized the trainer began looking for pups with behavioural characteristics that would make a good comfort dog. Brinkley was one of a litter of 10 pups and exhibited calm and comforting traits. The trainer thought she would be perfect for her role with SPD and that has proven too be accurate. Everyone had an opportunity to pet Brinkley which she loved. Thanks Tekla! |

NHS - David Swegle & Mary Powers SHS - Nathaniel Stout, Zaina Rumbolz, Tiara Munoz & Katelyn Grell Fritiof shared with us his prior week activities, which included playing in his first home soccer game at SHS and attending the first home football game which he is he learning more about. He thanked Kevin Heller as Kevin will be taking Fritiof to a CUBS game on Wednesday. Program - Christie introduced our District Governor, Kathy Kwiat-Hess from Rockford to a standing ovation. Kathy's background is a retired clinical social worker and one of her proudest and most impactful moments in her life was going to New York after 9/11 providing mental health services. Kathy spoke to us about our responsibility to engage in Rotary and encourage membership. She shared this year's theme which is "Be the Inspiration" . She explained the logo to us, indicating the blue swirls represent waves which are forces of nature with a heart inside indicating the heart of rotary and a sail on the outside, all of these symbols represent that "Rotarians Move with Heart and Direction". Program - Pat Pettenger introduced Sarah McFarlane, Adult Education Program Director and Laura Moreno, project VITAL Coordinator. Sarah has been at SVCC for 8 yrs and spoke about the AED program. Program is funded through state and federal grants. Included offering opportunities such as ; GED completion, assisting with citizenship application, basic educational skills, learning English. Some goals of AED are to assist students with becoming more employable, assisting parents in a successful partner in their children's education, improving a students participation in the community. This program had 40 GED grads last year. Laura spoke about her work with Project VITAL beginning with her background- Laura came to the US from Mexico 8 years ago. During this time, she learned English, completed an Associate's at Sauk and completed a Bachelor's degree through Western IL University. She now leads the Vital program. The goal of VITAL is to assist individuals to learn to read or improve their reading skills. Students are considered completing the program when they can read at the 9th grade level. This program is in great need of tutors. A flyer is attached to the bulletin about the fall VITAL training. Thanks Pat and Dave for another great program. |

Jude's children's hospital by obtaining donations and riding their motorcycles from Rock Falls to Memphis, where St. Jude's is located. 100% of funds raised go directly to St. Jude's hospital. Families of patients treated at St. Jude's never receive a bill for treatment, housing or food. Thank you Bob for your commitment to this worthy cause. Bob's goal is to raise $5,000 this year and donations may be sent to Bob's home at 2202 Scott Street in Rock Falls. |

He took us through his military beginning with his entering the Air Force immediately after graduating from Rock Falls High School. His distinguished career took him to many countries and missions throughout the world and now to a few weeks from retirement. His message included sharing his time at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. This is a day that we will never forget yet could not imagine what it would have been like for those directly under attack. His story was powerful, emotional and riveting. September 11 caused many of us to reevaluate our lives including the General. He left us with this message "Cherish each day and live each day being the best version of yourself." Jim spoke about the evolution of the foundation supporting both sports and academics at Sterling Public Schools. Golden Warrior TV has been a successful venture for the foundation with sports and arts broadcast regularly and patrons subscribing for a modest fee. This helps for raise funds for things like the Imacs used by students grades 6 - 12. A current project is the video scoreboard that will be installed at the north end of the stadium at SHS. Jim presented sponsorship opportunities for businesses to advertise on the scoreboard. The Sterling Schools Foundation is a huge asset to Sterling schools. Thanks Jim for your leadership. |

Program - Dana McCoy presented an informative program on their trip to France. Her son is in the marching Band at UNCC and they were invited to play at a celebratory event in Normandy marking the 74th anniversary of the invasion at Normandy. Next year marks the 75th anniversary of this historical event and France has planned elaborate events to honor those who invaded Normandy as a part of Operation Overlord to get the Allied armies onto the continent of Europe. I think we all felt moved as we were reminded of the lives lost in the fight for freedom. We are still needing to add another board member - please let Christy know if you are interested.

David indicated the program runs from August through May and includes the following: Direct experience with community topics like economic development and local/state government; public speaking, strategic planning and a volunteer project. John G. was one of the instructors and spoke about his curriculum which was using a real life situation and providing interactive discussion with the class. The new addition is approximately 51,000 Square Feet and will house a new gymnasium as well as space to house the fine arts programs. This additional space allows the CMS student athletes who have been practicing at Westwood to stay at CMS for practice which allows for students to finish earlier in the evening. This is an opportunity for local youth to experience mission work in their community. The first camp is scheduled for June 5 - 8 and the project goal is to paint 5 houses in 3 days. The youth will stay at Bethel Reformed church during the experience. The churches are anticipating the cost to be $14,000 for supplies, and resources and seeking donations. The have also been renovating the old Mercantile Building (Bose Building). It is ready for occupancy and is designed for primarily retail space on the first level. In partnership with SVCC and area manufacturers there has been an effort to educate the public, students and adults about the opportunity for manufacturing jobs in the Sauk Valley. WACC & SVCC have invested in purchasing two CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled Machinery) for WACC. This partnership allows area students/adults to attend classes in the manufacturing/technology area and to intern at participating companies in the area. This program helps to develop skilled workers for the available jobs in this industry within our own communities. Panel consisted of Josh West of SVCC, Steve Beerdman, WACC instructor, John G. from Frantz with input from Jerry Binder and Dave Hellmich. We are the first in Illinois to have such a progressive program and hopefully will be something others will model after. thanks for a great program. |

He went to Chicago with the Taylor family and helped with the Boy Scout Tree unloading and enjoyed the sights. He shared that he will be leaving in early January to have surgery on hi torn ACL. We are still seeking activities for Alex during the time he is here. Ideas are: Invites to dinner (likes spicy) movie, playing video games, sporting events and day trips would be very welcomed. If any one is traveling over winter break, Alex would be thrilled to be included even at his own expense. Program: Ed Anderson introduced Dr. Paul Steinke, CEO of CGH Medical Center - Dr. Steinke shared some information about CGH, such as being the largest employer in the area with 1500 employees and that they are a municipally owned hospital, one of three in IL. During employee orientation they impress that CGH is in the business of caring and often the care provided is a defining moment in a patient/family life. We are fortunate to have a state of the art and caring medical center in our community. |

News & Notes - Nov. 28, 2017Boots & Shoes - $58 50/50 - $96- Guests - Leo Patterson - DX Rotary, Brice Taylor - Outbound Exchange Student for next year Alex shared his experiences from the prior week. He also shared that he had an MRI on his injured knee and the diagnosis is a torn ACL which requires surgery. His plan is to go home in January and have the surgery in Taiwan. In the meantime he will remain with his current host family. We are seeking activities for Alex during the time he is here. Ideas are: Invites to dinner (likes spicy) movie, playing video games, sporting events and day trips would be very welcomed. If any one is traveling over winter break, Alex would be thrilled to be included even at his own expense. Program: Ed Anderson introduced Heather Sotelo, Executive Director of the GSDC. Heather told us the GSDC evolved from the Sterling Industrial Commission that is still in existence. one of the reasons for its formation is as a 501c3 which has no requirements to comply with the Open Meetings Act which helps to ensure privacy of discussions. She also shared they are moving a warehouse on the former NWSW property to the meadowlands to be used as warehouse space for local business. Heather also updated up on other projects taking place in Sterling. Very informative - thank you Heather. |

Kat is a case manager for the Adult Protective Services Program. This programs is funded by the State of IL and is responsible for investigating reports of financial, physical, and emotional abuse as well as passive neglect. Kat reported that they make unannounced visits and often face difficult situations where they may be in danger. They take measures to ensure their case workers are a safe as possible. Thank you Kat for sharing and providing a needed service for our community. |

Tony grew up in Savanna where she served as Mayor prior to her election to state office. Tony shared her interest in revising some of the many rules and also in state finances. Rhonda shared interesting information about signs and symptoms of heart attacks. There are 80,000 deaths per year and over 735,000 heart attacks per year. 50% of heart attacks occur outside of a hospital. Only 27% of those affected by heart attack are aware of their symptoms. Rhonda told us how important it is to be aware of symptoms and to get medical help right away. Thanks Rhonda for sharing an important message. |

This is two week visit to stay with fellow Rotarians in their home and learn about their country and culture. She informed the group that the health department clinic is a federally funded clinic and serves all community members no matter what the payer source. |

They brought an actual water filtration system and demonstrated it. As an alternative to wells, this program has proven to be cost effective and successful. Greg King was inducted as a new member. Welcome Greg! Program: Dave Murray had the program today. He introduced Ryan Kurth a Medic for the NW Rescue Air Evac located at the Whiteside County Airport. They are staffed with a helicopter pilot who is also an EMT, a critical care paramedic and a critical care nurse. They are a community based organization and not attached to any hospital. They partner with Med Evac and offer a membership program, where for a $65 annual membership, members are able to use the services for medical transport for no additional charges. Sounds like a great deal! Thanks Dave for bringing us such an informative program. |

Rollie shared lots of interesting information about the K-9 unit and his German Shepherd. These dogs go through an extensive 12 week training before being assigned. He shared some experiences with his dog. After the meeting many in the group were able to meet the dog outside and see the new specially outfitted vehicle that was purchased through a grant. Dick provided information on the solar panel system he uses as a primary power source for his personal residence. He showed photos of solar panel installations at his daughters farm and his son's residence. It was enlightening to learn that his excess solar power is banked at the power source and his is credited for that when he needs it. He showed us one of his electric bills that for $1.87. He spoke about the company's significant growth and their need to hire approximately 250 new people over the next 5 years. On Sunday she moved to her new Host Family - the Conklins. Program - Tom Jensen introduced Jim King, Jr. President of IFH Group. Jim gave an interesting presentation about the history of his business started by his grandfather and father and the evolution to where the company is today. The employee population in their company has grown to about 200 people between their company in Rock Falls and their recent acquisition in the state of Washington. Some of the product they make: cylinders used on the space shuttles, Hydraulic and fuel tanks, boxes used inside the Red Box Machines and Coinstar coin machines. They do custom work for several big name companies. It was good to hear about the growth and success of a company founded in Rock Falls. Thanks Jim.

John shared with us the responsibilities of the department, courthouses, jails, civil process serveing, patroling the county, kitchen and cooks for the jail population. They cover a significant amount of territory and in 2016 accumulated over 540,000 miles. Other programs the department is proud of are, the Giving Tree, DARE, Safe Passages, Fishing Derby. Program - Erin DeSutter introduced her program about participants in the drug court program in Whiteside county. Deb Robinson from the probation department shared about the assistance she provides to the participants. Erin introduced two participants in the program. Kelly who shared her journey that led her to drug court and now, as a program graduate, she assists others in the program. Another participant, Jamie, also spoke about her journey. Kelly is currently in Stage 4 of the 5 stage program. Both of these brave women provided powerful testimonials of how they have been helped and supported in this program. It was a moving program and one that we were proud to bear witness to. Thank you Erin.

Program - Larry Cooper introduced Brian Tribley from Firehouse of God Ministries. Brian provided background on his calling to serve and how he began his ministry in Rock Falls. He spoke of the work they do as a part of their Service Outreach Program and homes they provide for area men in need. Firehouse of God ministries will also operate as a chapter of the "Pink Heals" Tour, a national organization. Program - Ed Andersen introduced Kevin Mullen from Sterling Steel, LLC. Kevin is the President of Sterling Steel and is the third generation employee of Northwestern Steel & Wire. Kevin showed a video which illustrated how the rod and wire is made from scrap metal at the plant. The wire is primarily used to make bed springs and welding rods. Nicole developed an interest in the Holocaust and has developed her education on this subject as well as other genocides in the world.

We applaud Nicole for recognizing the importance of educating our youth on these horrific times in history to raise awareness and encourage kindness to others.

Antoine is here from Yvetot, France and Caleb will be visiting France and staying with Antoine's family. Caleb is excited to see historical sites and architecture in France while he is there. Antoine is involved in triathlons and likes to garden. He said everything in the United States is large, houses, cars, etc. Antoine taught Caleb how to make crepes while here. We are honored to sponsor these young men in this program.
